Flaxseeds have been a part of diet fads for a long time. People might not know the benefits of consuming flaxseeds, but they know that they are highly beneficial for health. From regulating cholesterol to preventing constipation, this one ingredient is promoted by every health expert.
If you have been struggling to manage diabetes, witnessing indigestion quite often, or finding it hard to deal with the symptoms of menopause, flaxseeds can help you with these conditions. With Diwali 2023 around the corner and everyone bracing up for the festive season ahead, it is crucial to add a few healthy elements to your diet so that you can relish an array of dishes without worrying about your health. Flaxseeds also help you beat cravings by keeping you feel full for long.
We connected with Khushboo Jain Tibrewala, Founder of The Health Pantry, Nutritionist and Diabetes Educator, to bring you five ways to add these seeds to your diet without much hassle.
Add Flaxseeds To Smoothies
Flaxseeds can either be soaked or blended into powder form when you are planning to add them to your favourite smoothie. If you like to add a crunch to your beverage, you can add them whole. It will help you keep cravings at bay and reduce weight as well.
Flaxseeds help to improve indigestion, which can be a common issue during indigestion because most of us consume oily and spicy dishes. It can regulate bowel function and lead to constipation, but a glass of delicious, fibre-rich smoothie can help you pass stool easily. You can also add these seeds to buttermilk.
Replace Eggs With Flaxseeds
During the festive season, many people avoid eating eggs, however, you need a supplement that can add protein to your diet. Eggs are also used as a binding agent while preparing many dishes.
If you are cooking something that needs eggs, you can use flaxseeds. In a large bowl, mix flaxseeds and water in a ratio of 1:3 and keep it aside for 10 minutes for the mixture to become a little pulpy. You can add this to cake, patty, or cupcake batter, and your eggless dessert will be ready in no time.
Add Flaxseeds To Salad Dressings
Most people think that salads are boring and bland. But our nutritionist believes that you might be curating them wrong. Salads are delicious, wholesome, and packed with nutrients and vitamins. Apart from the natural taste of vegetables and fruits, you can add flavours to any salad by preparing a dressing (Peanut Butter Salad Dressing) that has a perfect balance of tangy, spicy, and sweet flavours.
To enhance the taste of a salad, you can add flaxseeds to it. They will add a crunch to otherwise soft vegetables and pulpy fruits and elevate the nutrition quotient of the meal. Salad with flaxseeds is a great option for dinner if you are watching your weight.
Add Flaxseeds To Psyllium Husk Drink
Psyllium husk is a type of fibre, often consumed as a laxative. It helps people regulate blood sugar levels in their bodies and improve the levels of cholesterol. Nutritionist Tibrewala suggested adding flaxseeds to it so that you can extract the maximum benefits of both ingredients. She also said that it can be a good combination to reduce bloating. This drink is also good for weight loss.

Add Flaxseeds To Dal
You can add powdered flaxseeds to dal (lentils) to elevate its nutrition level. Also, when you add the powder, it does not add a strong flavour to the dish. If you like it raw, you can garnish your lentils with a tablespoon of flaxseeds (Benefits Of Soaked Flaxseeds).
The nutritionist shared what not to do when adding flaxseeds to the diet. Here are a few things you must note:
- Avoid heating seeds too much
- Avoid roasting flaxseeds because it can break the good fat
- You must always store flaxseeds in the powdered form in the freezer and not at room temperature. It will help to prevent loss of nutrition.
