Who created Mahamrityunjaya Mantra?

According to the legend, sage Mrikandu was a great devotee of Lord Shiva who was always engrossed in the devotion of Lord Shiva. Sage Mrikandu had supreme knowledge of all things by the grace of Lord Shiva but he was always sad for not having children.

One day he decided to do penance in devotion to Lord Shiva to have a child. Lord Shiva was pleased with his penance and blessed sage Mrikandu to have a bright and highly knowledgeable child.

However, Lord Shiva also told them that this child would be short-lived and would die at an early age. After this, a son was born in the house of sage Mrikandu, who, like his father, was extremely knowledgeable and a devotee of Shiva from an early age.

Sage Mrikandu named his son Markandeya. When the sage grew up a little, he told his son about his short life, and then Markandeya took a vow of penance for Shiva. Markandeya composed 'Mahamrityunjaya Mantra' and started chanting it.

Markandeya performed severe penance by chanting this mantra for many years, due to which Lord Shiva was pleased and blessed him with a long life. Because it was created by the child, Markandeya, this mantra became the favourite of Lord Shiva.
